Shanan Custer
Described by Twin Cities critics as a “clever an inventive voice in comic theater,” Shanan Custer [formerly Wexler] is a veteran of the Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis, where she wrote and performed in 14 sketch comedy revues, the more recent of which “Das Bootylicious” was named a Top Critics Choice for Best New Play 2004 by the Star Tribune. With Actors Theater of Minnesota, Shanan has both written and performed in "We Gotta Bingo" and "Tony n' Timothy's Wedding," performed in "Tony n' Tina's Wedding" as well as directed their runaway hit "Deer Camp: The Musical!" the highest selling show in 2008 and in 2009 at Theatre L’Homme Dieu in Alexandria, MN. Other original work includes “From Here to Maternity” with Joshua Scrimshaw (Top Ten Selling Show of the Minnesota Fringe Festival, 2007), “Pride and Plot of Pointlessness” (performed with Hang Kitty Productions at the Theater Garage in 2008) and “2 Sugars, Room for Cream” with Carolyn Pool and Peter Moore (Top Ten Selling show at Fringe, 2009). “2 Sugars, Room for Cream” will be a featured production in the Illusion Theater’s “Fresh Ink Series” July of 2010. With Hardcover Theater, Shanan co-wrote and performed in all five episodes of “London After Midnight” as well as “Johnny Bocca’s Sex Farce for Swingin’ Lovers,” an adaptation of Giovanni Boccacio’s The Decameron. Recently, Shanan wrote and directed their holiday hit “Mary Loves Joseph: A Wonderful Love Story,” for the 2010 holiday season at Mixed Blood Theater in Minneapolis. Shanan also made her History Theatre debut last fall in “Dudley: Rigged for Laughter.” And Shanan appeared in “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul spring of 2010.
